A look inside the Barefoot reunion

Merry belated Christmas and happy Boxing Day and New Year to all.

For this post, probably the last of 2015, I had intended to convert another of the A&E Duck Dynasty photographs into a Barefoot family edition.  The original picture - shown below - is that of a reunion of Robertson family members organized for an episode called "Stand By Mia" that aired on Mar. 26, 2014.  It was the idea of Mia Robertson, daughter of show co-star Jase, who was born with a cleft lip and palate and wanted to have something special before a major bone-graft surgery to help correct the condition.  In all, 85 people showed up.

The version I had intended would have featured the 13 farm residents, as well as many others, in the Robertson roles.  This would have "commemorated" the reunion I have documented in an earlier post in which I shared two of the document files.

However, I have found the work to be daunting and, although I am continuing to work on it, the Barefoot/Robertson project is far from done.  But I felt I needed to do a replacement I could share with you right away.  So what you're seeing now is a picture of Buddy Wayne, Bobby Ray, and Brenda at the reunion modeling the T-shirts that were made for the event.

The shirts themselves were designed at the Custom Ink website for the color choice and the text and at Photoshop for the addition of the graphic, which was selected from another design.

Hambone the hunter: Part deux

Earlier this year, I placed Hambone on the set of Duck Dynasty, a real A&E television series starring the Robertson family of West Monroe, LA.  I placed her in camouflage as she prepared to go on the set as a special guest star.

This time, I have created another photo montage related to Hambone's "appearance" on that episode, in which she joins the male stars of the series in an actual duck hunt on the family's expansive property.

I began by uploading the appropriate picture found on one of the photo albums maintained on the show's official website into Photoshop.  Then I replaced some blank space on the right side by duplicating Jep's image, then placing Hambone's face on top of it.  On her face, she wears the same camouflage makeup that Jep does; I used the clone stamp tool to spread it all the way through.  Her cap is the same as worn by Brittany Barefoot of Greenwood, SC in a picture I've used a lot; it looked dark in the original picture, so I increased both brightness and contrast so it would look more like the head coverings worn by the Robertsons.  Lake D'Arbonne is an artificial lake close to the family property; it was created by a dam on the Ouachita River.

Here is the result of the merger of real and made-up TV star families.

Gone Barefoot sneak peek: Brandy's in another beauty pageant

It's been a while since I've placed anything here.  But in just a few months, Gone Barefoot is supposed to start its ninth season, and I need some all new storylines for my characters.

One that has come to me in recent days is a new beauty pageant for Brandy to enter.  I was inspired to do this after TLC recently premiered Coach Charming, which is about an attorney who does pageant coaching on the side.  Many of his clients have been competing for years.

After winning the Miss Idealia pageant (season 3, episode 1) and touring the South (season 4, episode 1), Brandy sets her sights higher in one of the first episodes of the new season.  Brandy goes to the state fairgrounds in Raleigh to enter the Miss Rural North Carolina pageant - and she wins!  As a result, it's on to the Miss Rural America contest.  There, she joins 50 other contestants; they represent every state and Washington, D.C. (don't ask how they can find anyone who lives in the country in the district, but they do).  They gather in Nashville, TN for the national contest, with the winner moving on to Germany for the Miss Rural World pageant.

Once again, Annie helps Brandy prepare, but this time the coaching is more intense and the stakes are higher.  Can Brandy go from being the best in the South to the best in America?

The picture below shows the last names of all 51 contestants.  In most cases, the last names are those of actual residents of the states they represent as I've found in various electronic phone books.  Some notable exceptions are Ratterree (as in Lindsay, who was part of B.W. and Brittany's wedding), Plumpkin (Boo is also in this pageant), Hoomanawanui (from a NFL tight end with a name of Hawaiian origin, but grew up in Champaign, IL), and McLyman (actually from California but "moved" to Alaska).

The map comes from WorldAtlas.com.

Bunky's new "album cover"; Buddy Wayne and Bobby Ray share grand prize

A lot went on this week with some of my characters.

First, the second annual Super Bowl Scramble is over, with an unexpected result: Brothers Buddy Wayne and Bobby Ray have agreed to be co-champions of the competition.  After losses by teams assigned to Katie vonHinz and Billie Barefoot in the previous week, both were given back their original teams.  It wasn't easy, but the Broncos (which was B.W.'s original team) and the Panthers (which was Bobby's) pulled out
wins in the sixth week of the NFL season.  However, rather than continue into Week 7 - and, it turns out, into another redraw - both agreed to share the overall title and both will be accommodated into the VIP trip to Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.

"We both had the same idea as to who to send to Santa Clara anyway," Buddy Wayne said in a statement on Monday.  "We want to send our mom Brenda, our brother Bryson, and also send a Bluebird Fund client from every market which has an NFL team - 31 in all."  (The Bluebird Fund is a non-profit organization I made up on Brenda's behalf.  As mentioned two weeks ago, it would combine grief counseling and funeral payment assistant for those who are suddenly deceased.)

Had the Fund existed, nominations for potential guests of the Barefoot brothers at Super Bowl 50 would have begun Thursday.  Nominees could be either themselves or someone else they know, and the deadline would be November 20.  Forms would have been available only at the fund's website.

Complete results will be revised and posted next time.

Now, as promised, here is the photo montage which converts the original picture of Marc Dobson that I displayed last week to the album cover of Bunky's recorded debut as a one-man band.  Before I continue, I must add that this is not the "B.O.M.B." publicity photo I posted two years ago, and shown to the right. That was a good picture, but not a realistic one.  This one (below) is much better.

First, I took Bunky's face and placed it on top of Dobson's.  I then used adjustment layers so that his neck and arms shared the same color as the face.  I then made a selection of everything but Bunky/Dobson and used the backspace on my keyboard to remove all other items.  After erasing some extra parts of the selection, I created a new blank layer and filled it with blue to be the backdrop of the "album cover."

With that, a unique musical career is born!

Virtual trip to North Carolina State Fair is fruitful

Today, I took my weekly trip to the public library in Cerritos.  It is a large and impressive facility, complete with an aquarium near the entrance, several themed rooms, a third-level meeting and party room, and a huge lab with over 80 Internet-connected computers for public use.

After my regular visit to the Field of Schemes site, which tracks the use of taxpayer money to build professional and major-college sports venues in the U.S., I go to other sites which are either newsworthy or for which I am interested somehow.

Because I have a storyline for an upcoming season of Gone Barefoot in which Miss Hambone is crowned the "redneck queen," I decided to visit the website of the North Carolina State Fair, at which said event
would be held.  The fair opened with a preview on Thursday and officially on Friday; it will continue until Oct. 25.  What I found was more than I bargained for, as I got relevant news and ideas of all kinds.

First, I learned about a real one-man band that will perform throughout the fair.  His name is Marc Dobson; he is pictured on the right and is the subject of a blog post on the official site of the state department of agriculture, which organizes the state fair.  I had seen other one-man band photos before, but they didn't capture an actual performer in all his glory like that one.  Believe me, I have plans to superimpose Bunky's face above Dobson's for a future Photoshop project, and I'll bring it to you here.  Matter of fact, I'll have Bunky say that Dobson is the biggest influence in his own career.  It makes sense, as the state fair is in Bunky's hometown of Raleigh.

Then there's the Village of Yesteryear.  This part of the fair features dozens of artisans make clothes, pottery, musical instruments, and other items in the old-fashioned way.  It is my hope that some of the visitors to the fair are inspired to learn these crafts and pass them down to future generations, so these methods are not lost in a world of automation and mass production.  The village has its own year-round website.

Also, the Barefoot last name shows up at least twice, based on the sites I went to.  The first listing I encountered was when I browsed a map showing vendors of food and merchandise, as well as rides and shows.  One of the food vendors is listed as "Barefoot," which presumably is the seller's last name.  According to the map, he (or she) sells "Hot Dogs, Italian Sausage, Fries, Chili Cheese Fries, Steak & Cheese & Drinks."  To find this vendor, click on the food and ride finder on the fair webpage and type up "barefoot" in the search box.

The second time was I went to the page with the press releases.  The first food judging contest of the year was for the best recipe using peanut butter and jelly.  And guess what?  Samuel Barefoot of Benson was the third-place winner and took home $100!  See his recipe as well as that of the other prize winners (Gretchen van de Carr of Durham won the top honor) at this address.

Congratulations to all the Barefoots at the North Carolina State Fair, real and imagined.

My comeback on Photoshop and survivor update

I hadn't used Photoshop CC in quite a while, and I had gotten bored with the near-completion of my family reunion program, so it was back to Photoshop earlier this week.

Over a two-day period (Tuesday and Wednesday), I created a publicity poster linking the 32 National Football League teams to the Bluebird Fund.  I imagined a league-wide campaign to raise awareness of Brenda Barefoot's charity, which would have two major functions:
  • Help pay funeral costs if a loved one died unexpectedly under significant financial hardship that cannot be made up through insurance or other means;
  • Provide grief counseling to individuals and communities suffering tragic events of great significance (recent examples would include the massive flooding in South Carolina or the shootings at a community college in Oregon).
Of course, the web address at the bottom of the ad is fictitious, but the need is real.  Organizations like the American Red Cross and some insurance agencies perform many of the same functions that the Bluebird Fund would do.

Now for the ad.  I went to NFLShop.com and accessed the pages on which customized NFL jerseys are sold.  On each page, I used the preview function to match the Barefoot surname to the numbers of current and former players from each of the league's teams.  Each was saved as a separate JPEG file, then transferred to a blank 20-by-16 canvas.  One by one, the right-hand side of each JPEG was cut away, leaving only the back of each jersey.  The resulting layers were then selected together and resized to make room for the text at the bottom.

The Bluebird Fund "logo" was created using the dry brush filter picked from Filter Gallery, applied to a personal file containing the bird.  (That's the same one that is on Buddy Wayne's shirt in the "official family photograph.")

While I'm on the subject of the NFL, my survivor pool has five contestants left: Rhett Jeffers was eliminated with the Eagles' loss to the Redskins (23-20), and "Baker Beth" was burnt by the Vikings' 23-7 loss to the Broncos.

Five contestants are left, and due to Bobby Ray's original Panthers having one of the week's byes, a redraw had to be conducted with the following results: Bobby was assigned to the Bears (Sunday at Kansas City), B.W. will now have the Steelers (Monday at San Diego), Billie now has the Lions (Sunday home to the Cardinals, his original team), Brittany Raylene was given the Cowboys (home to the Patriots on Sunday), and Katie von Hinz has been assigned the Titans (another home game, Sunday vs. Buffalo).

For a reminder of the complete list of contestants, see this post.

NFL "survivor" league is back

For the second year in a row, I have arranged for some of my favorite characters, their families and friends, and some people I've brought in from real life for a survivor pool based on results of National Football League games.

A reminder: There are 32 entries, one assigned to each of the league's teams.  In the first week, those matched with the winning teams stay alive, while those paired with the losing teams are eliminated.  After that, as long as a team wins, that contestants remains alive.  The last undefeated contestant will win a VIP trip to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, CA on Feb. 7, 2016.  Last week, Deb Holmes won the contest and got to see the New England Patriots' win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

Here is the field for Super Bowl Scramble: The Road to Santa Clara:
Arizona - Billie Barefoot, chiropractor
Atlanta - Rhett Jeffers, pro wrestling/auto racing commentator
Baltimore - Brooke Liptrap, BMN Superfan/The Call (eliminated Sep. 13 - 19-13 loss to DEN)
Buffalo - +Harvey Barefoot, linebacker/amateur wrestler
Carolina - Bobby Ray Barefoot, Gone Barefoot
Chicago - *Doug Scherer, BMN Superfan (eliminated Sep. 13 - 31-16 loss to GB)
Cincinnati - Brittany Raylene, bluegrass singer
Cleveland - *Dustin Fox, ESPN college football analyst (eliminated Sep. 13 - 24-6 loss to NYJ)

Summaries of Gone Barefoot, seasons 7 and 8

At last, here are the synopses of the Gone Barefoot reality documentary series as they would have aired in the 2015 calendar year.

Notice that for the first time, there is a special episode added at the last of the second season of the calendar year, season 8.  This is accounted in part by a late Labor Day.

Season 7
Jan. 4, 2015: "Back Home"
The Barefoots return home from their New Jerusalem show and find there is a lot to do to catch up, and plans to make for the future.  Buddy Wayne thanks participants on the latest season of BMN Superfan for helping out with the chores during their absence and congratulated Aubrey Graham for winning the contest; he also updates plans to bring the entire extended clan together in Meadow.  Braylor McPatter delivers several awards for the Dixie Rising show; "Best Overall Performance," "Best Command Performance" (turns out Jesus was watching after all), and "Best Breakout Act" for Hambone.  At the end of the show, a holler comes over from a few yards away; who could it be - and why?
Jan. 11, 2015: "Extreme Makeover Meadow Edition"
It turns out that the holler came from Popeye's brother Labell, and it was to tell everyone that he, his wife Allene, and their 20(!) children need a new house to replace the series of trailer parks at which they have lived.  Needless to day, the project is huge and they need as much help as possible to build it.  B.W. and Popeye immediately adjourn to discuss the plans for renovation.  Shortly after that, the clan attends Brandy's dance recital at Lena Peacock's school in Meadow; here we meet Hylton Tripp, a man in his mid-20s from Greenville and East Carolina University graduate with a clear down-home lifestyle away from the dance floor.
Jan. 18, 2015: "Brawl Game"
The Barefoot family softball team has a chance to do something it hasn't done in over 30 years - win the local league championship.  To clinch the title, it has to beat the Beasley family team, the perennial favorites led by fast-pitching ringer Juanita.  The rivalry heats up before the game when Ralph circulates old pictures of female basketball players wearing uniforms reading "BULL B**CHES."  A conflicted Annie - Ralph's mom but born a Beasley - clearly sides with Ralph and joins the Blackies' rooting section to cheer on Harvey and his teammates, which causes a major argument in the stands before the game.  During it, the benches clear after Juanita hits Harvey with a pitch.  However, just two innings later, Harvey gets his revenge with a game-tying home run.  Still down two in the last inning, Robert (grandson of distant relative "Rack") has a single and RBI to tie the score.  Beth then comes up and hits a fly ball dropped by a nephew of Annie.  Two runs score and the Blackies win the title!
Jan. 25, 2015: "The Makeover Begins"
Work on Labell's family's new dwelling begins.  Popeye and Harvey waste no time in planning and building the entire project and dozens of family and friends jump on board in the Southern equivalent of a "barn raising."  Hambone, ever the tomboy, joins the crew that's otherwise all-male.  Meanwhile, Bryson makes his debut playing for the school's flag football team, and Pink and his wife Elinor show off all eight of their children, contrasting their daily lives with those of subsequent generations.
Feb. 8, 2015: "Move That Bus!"
(There was no show the previous week due to Super Bowl XLIX.)
Labell's new dwelling is finally ready!  There is a huge celebration that brings the extended Barefoot family together again.  B.W. sings and plays guitar, Hambone does an original performance called "Carolina Slappin'," Hambone's friend Bellamy Wood sings a country hit song, teacher Noah Barefoot reads poetry, and cousin Beth serves a huge cake.  "This is better than I ever could have imagined," marvels Labell.  (The entire episode is done as a tribute to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which aired on ABC from 2003 to 2012; the episode title has to do with how the finished projects were revealed.)
Feb. 15, 2015: "Meet Our Hidden Families"
Ralph, Harvey, and Hambone reveal that they were husbands and parents in their previous lives, and make trips to see them.  Ralph goes to the Batten Farm in Selma to see his wife, Ellender, and their three teenage children.  He recounts his ministry trips around the world and teaches the Batten children how to farm using the traditional methods he learned overseas and at home.  Harvey, who was a husband, father, and grandfather, sees his wife Rena Stephenson and other relatives at their home in Elevation.  Finally, Hambone shares the heartbreak of giving up on having a family after a miscarriage and a stillbirth; when doctors couldn't figure why they occurred, she gave up on having a family of her own.  Instead, she threw herself into her work, and spent the last 18 years before the Rapture working for Johnston County Public Schools.  There is also footage of the ceremony a few years back at which she received her GED (high-school equivalency degree).
Mar. 1, 2015: "The World Is Waiting"
(There was no show the previous week due to the 87th Academy Awards.)
Brandy and Bunky get the good news: They've been cast for The Amazing Race, CBS' long-standing reality TV series!  As they pack up for the start of the season, Ralph holds a special service to pray for their well-being as they travel and compete.  Brandy admits to high expectations for the team: "If we don't win this season, we'll call it a failure."  But the rest of the clan is not to be outdone: Jennifer begins work on the second book in the Ella Littlebridge series, Hambone turns Halloween into a friends' night out, and Bryson scores his first touchdown in flag football.
Mar. 8, 2015: "The Blindside"
It started as just another night at the dinner table, until Hambone says, "Tonight, I wish to tell you that I will be leaving this place in just a few months."  There is literally a minute's silence, as if someone dear to them had died.  Once that ends, B.W. asks pointedly, "So where are you going?"  Hambone: "I'm going to live with 'Uncle Bud' [Bud Strickland] and his family.  I'm going to live and work at Camp Paradise full time, but if you need me back here, I'll be on call always.  I will always be a member of your family and I thank you for all you've done for me."  Ralph, her brother, then led a prayer for the last few months of her sister's time at the family farm and for what she will do in the future.  Before then, the Barefoot Boys have their first full performance at halftime of a Meadow Indians football home game, while the entire Barefoot Mommas' Club - 24 strong! - have a meeting and photo shoot.
Season 8
Jul. 5, 2015: "One Wrong Turn"
For the moment, the extended Barefoot family set aside their shock over Hambone's big announcement at the end of season 7 to go on their version of the Amish rumspringa - in which they leave the farm to participate in modern activities.  Harvey makes his debut as a mixed martial arts performer at Smithfield-Selma High School. Brenda participates in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus at PNC Arena in Raleigh, but first attends "clown college" in Florida.  Bobby Ray, Jennifer, and Belinda head for New York City to see the memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks.  Finally, Brandy and Bunky's dream appearance on The Amazing Race comes to an end when they are eliminated after five legs of the 11 that were run.  It doesn't help that another team U-turns them, forcing them to complete both detours.
Jul. 12, 2015: "Christmas in July"
Buddy Wayne goes on a "grand Christmas tour" of New York City, the German Alps, and Bethlehem with his wife Brittany Spears and their daughter Lizzie.  As a result, Popeye takes over the farm with the help of some of his siblings and cousins; they take over the annual Xmas celebration with the McLamb Madrigals and "Santa" (Popeye himself).  After Hambone returns from a U.S. tour with Steve Hickman and the Lierman Brothers, she's given a bobblehead doll owned by Bud's grandson Kenny that contains some advice for her, as stated by the star of Duck Dynasty, Willie Robertson.  She then makes the decision to blow up the car B.W. got for Christmas (season 1, episode 8).
Jul. 19, 2015: "A Dumb Butt Gets Lucky"
Before Hambone can destroy Buddy Wayne's Christmas-gift car, she must find it.  First, she asks around the farm and Camp Paradise, but no one claims to know where the car is.  She then ventures out to seek the car at every barn in the area; after all, she's heard stories of vintage cars that have been found in barns.  At the end of the show, she finds it - behind a distant relative's house four blocks from home!  Of course, by this point everyone comes back to start the spring planting season and Annie introduces pawpaw trees, which are said to produce fruit much like bananas.  Also, Belinda makes a Little Jill Horner doll that visits the dollhouse for "acting lessons."
Jul. 26, 2015: "We Are the Good Pirates"
As a reward for the students at the Overshot school, including Bryson and Belinda, at the end of the year, Popeye organizes a cruise of Mill Pond and a mock pirate attack.  The unsuspecting victims are actually Kate Lynn (a distant relative) and other professional actors.  After the "invasion," the school brings in Bellamy Wood to perform country songs past and present.  Meanwhile, Hambone gets help in planning the Buddy Wayne car blowup from an unlikely source - softball rival Juanita Beasley!  As for B.W., he receives news of his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Aug. 2, 2015: "Executive of the Year"
Hambone brings together her immediate family and friends Sammy Bizzell and Bellamy Wood to reveal her plans for the event at which she will blow up Buddy Wayne's car.  She will hold a bonfire barbeque and campout for a group of invited guests; at the end, B.W. will be brought in, thinking he is being honored for his work as a TV executive.  Meanwhile, B.W., Belinda, Bryson and Amy (cousin of B.W. and Bryson's school crush) go to Bentonville to visit a petting zoo and watch pig races; and the Barefoot Mommas' Club's latest party celebrates the height of British power in the Victorian age of the late-19th century.
Aug. 9, 2015: "Scratch...Golfing"
Buddy Wayne, Bobby Ray, and Jennifer play in the Bud Strickland Family Golf Day in Smithfield, at the invitation of Dina Strickland (B.W.'s aunt and Bud's daughter-in-law).  As expected for first-timers, let's say their golf games need a lot of improvement, but in the end everyone had a great time.  Meanwhile: Popeye shows yet another talent by creating a portrait of John Noah (his father and the only common ancestor of 10 of the 13 residents), Annie learns how to use the BeDazzler after getting lessons from a leading designer and author, and Hambone leads a tour of her new, very modern guest room in Bud Strickland's house.
Aug. 16, 2015: "Breakin' Down Bone"
As the time approaches for the bonfire BBQ and car-explosion party, Hambone receives shocking news: Camp Paradise is closing down!  Bud Strickland explains that, due to the fact that all the necessary re-training has been done and all clients are now running their own subsistence, family-based farms, there is no longer any need for their services.  Hambone is weeping as she thinks about herself and other colleagues who have lost their jobs; Bud responds, "Those should be tears of joy.  Everyone can take care of themselves now."  From tears to turmoil: Buddy Wayne goes to the county athletic department in Smithfield to appeal a decision that made him ineligible to play or coach Meadow's basketball team; it was based on his growing up in nearby Benson, which now has a team of its own.  Fortunately, he's able to show paperwork showing he has permanently relocated to the farm, and his place on the team is restored.  Finally, it's back to Hambone as she finishes her preparations, as the freshly-killed pig is smoked and the detonation area is selected.
Aug. 23, 2015: "Live Blow-Up Episode"
"Hambone's Big Bonfire BBQ" takes place live from the Camp Paradise set.  The pretext of the destruction of Buddy Wayne's gift car is an "ultimate cast reunion" from shows that the Barefoots' in-house TV network has shown over the years.  They enjoy food, activities, live music and clips of Hambone's time on the network.  About two-thirds of the way through the scheduled 90-minute show, Bunky hits the detonator and BOOM! the 3,500-pound car Buddy Wayne got for Christmas is no more.  B.W. then shows up and, after expressing concern about the car no longer being there, he has some huge news: She doesn't have to leave the house after all!  Instead, Hambone is offered a new job as the farm's director of global outreach and entertainment.  She will have four months off for outreach followup and special shows around the world, and in addition she will have her own guest room to which she can invite younger family members and her friends.  The only condition: "You still have to clean the poop and milk Mildred every day," B.W. insists.  Despite that, Hambone accepts, and her new life at the farm officially begins.  At the end of the show, Hambone sums up, "So redneck logic is right after all!" at which point Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson makes a surprise cameo.  (Hambone had appeared earlier in the calendar year as a special guest on the A&E show.)
Aug. 30, 2015: "Goin' Big"
Highlights of all the family's special events so far are presented with new commentary from the farm residents.  They include holiday celebrations, B.W.'s vow renewal ceremony, the New Jerusalem show, and the explosion of the Christmas car.

Oh, and what is that "redneck logic?"  Before I answer, I will disclose that I got the contents from, believe it or not, a talking bobblehead doll of Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson I won at Dave & Buster's.  Here is the quote:
If you want to take something away from him, blow it up.  He'll be so enamored by the fire that he'll forget all about what he's losing.

I've seen the sea...

Over the last two weeks, the man behind this site has visited both the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA and Sea World in San Diego.   Here are a few of the more than 30 pictures I took - combined - at both locations.

My visit to the aquarium was on Aug. 14.  Among the highlights were a visit to Lorikeet Forest to see exotic tropical birds, an up-close view of sharks in a large outdoor tropical tank, and special displays emphasizing jellyfish.  In addition, the aquarium had photo displays about human impacts on the water table and water levels, several short films on sea life, and education on marine animal care.

The trip to Sea World was ten days later (this past Monday).  Most of my time was spent traveling to, and seeing, five of the six shows on offer.  This included the world-famous Shamu show (killer whale), as well as a dolphin show and sea lions doing parodies of popular TV programs.  I have no photos from any of these; instead, I decided to photograph more sea creatures.  What you see here are a flamingo display I saw on the way to the Shamu show, and a walrus that lives in the Wild Arctic display.

Finally, I would like to congratulate myself on my 300th official post!  (I have made more, but I threw away about 75 of them about two years ago as they had no relevance to the general subject of this blog.)  Thanks to all for reading and paying attention to my work.

More items from my InDesign project

My InDesign project is just about complete in the sense of how I want it to look, although obviously not all pictures or design elements have been filled in as of yet.

What has become apparent from putting together the family reunion program is how extensive Buddy Wayne's extended family is, and I'm not just talking about the 13 people - from four generations - that live with him.  As I've mentioned, John Noah is the common ancestor; one of his children, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild live on the farm, as well as three in-laws.  (I'll try to show John's "picture" in a future post.)  Well, his extended family has exactly 105 people in it; so many in fact that I need these three screen shots to convey them all.  The first is the full tree, but names aren't visible; the next two are close-ups.  The reason is that I was dependent on the Snipping Tool to transfer the InDesign files into JPG files this blog can use.

(And that's not to mention all the descendants from most of John Noah's five brothers and sisters, his 22 first cousins, and dozens of second cousins.  John's grandfather was "Pink," who had 10 siblings - five of them old enough for their own families - and eight children of his own.  I estimate that the reunion would have somewhere between 600 and 700 people, or four times the number [or more] that attend the reunion of my mom's side of the family that occurs every two years.)

I also made a capture of the John Noah Jam page.  This is the annual Labor Day weekend event in which descendants whose ages have been rolled back to between 6 and 18 (from three different generations) participate in games and activities suitable for their ages.  Younger residents play games and have activities during the daytime, then leave the premises to the teenagers who have more games, a dance music party, and a sleepover.  This year's guest is a familiar face.:)  I estimate that maybe about 30 or 40 people show up.

Scenes from my InDesign project

Here I present two scenes from my InDesign project which would depict the Miles Vinson "Pink" Barefoot Family Reunion.  I have been working on it most weekdays - and even some weekends - since ABC Adult School ended on June 17.

First, here's the cover.  The original photo was one used by Brady Poirier in the Photoshop classes I once took; he used this to teach us how to turn a daytime picture into a nighttime one and add Christmas lights.  This time, I wanted to "repaint" the house pink to match the honoree's nickname.  I did so by selecting the house and use hue and saturation to change the color.  Some extra pixels remained, so I use the brush to hide them from the layer mask.  From there, I opened the final result from Photoshop into my InDesign file, which is easy to do since both Photoshop and InDesign are part of the same Creative Suite made by the same company (as I posted last month).

Next is an "ad" for Bentonville Speedway, a 4/10-mile short track whose clay/dirt surface is reminiscent of the very first stock-car race tracks ever built, in the 1940s.  Its location would be near the Bentonville Battlefield, site of one of the very last major battles of the American Civil War.  It's significant because it is the first time I have ever visually depicted Buddy Wayne as a race-car driver.  To do this, I placed B.W.'s face on top of a hat taken from a photograph of ARCA Racing Series driver Thomas Praytor, with Praytor's uniform beneath it.  The other three "drivers" are portrayed in their entireties by the real thing: unknown (no longer available on the ARCARacing.com site, but saved on my hard drive as Bubba Sparks, not to be confused with the rapper), Austin Wayne Self, and Sarah Cornett-Ching.  The race track is East Lincoln Speedway in Stanly, NC and the car, used in the U.S. Legends Car series, has a vintage 1930s look.  I adapted the logo of Richmond International Raceway by removing the stylized "R" and using the track's name.  Finally, the address and phone number are actually that of a local pig farm.

What I'll do this summer...

It's been a little over a week since my time at ABC Adult School ended.  I'll miss the four-times-a-week dance class rotation, not the least because my dad claims I've lost some weight.  I haven't measured and don't know for sure, but I'll sure take my father's word for it!

As I try to find some new ways to exercise, I have committed to another personal project involving an Adobe program; however, this time, it's using InDesign CC instead of Photoshop CC.  InDesign is a desktop publishing program that is often used to design brochures, flyers, and even entire books.

Specifically, what I plan to do is an official magazine chronicling a mythical reunion of Buddy Wayne Barefoot's distant relatives.  B.W. is the great-great-great-grandson of Miles Vinson "Pink" Barefoot, a real person who I have integrated into my story.  (I should point out that the late Alfred Barefoot, whose name was one of the bases of the main character, had the same relationship in real life that B.W. does in my story.)

Thanks to the post-resurrection world, eight(!) different generations have been invited to the old cemetery in Meadow - now a private house and meeting room - for a family reunion on the second Saturday in July, every odd year.  Therefore, if this reunion existed, the next one would be on July 11.

Due to the large amount of work required, this project will last through most, if not all, of the ABC Adult School summer vacation, which will end on Sep. 8.  Even then, some followup work could be required to manipulate and post pictures.  I will take some screen grabs and place them here as the work progresses.

Hambone, fishing, and hunting

This is a week I have made and rediscovered some projects.

Up first is my character crush, Hambone.  This is a montage I made months ago at ABC Adult School, but rediscovered only this past week while searching for something for other (and I do wish I could remember just what I was seeking).  Anyway, this shows an interesting, informal battle for cow-milking supremacy between the beauty queen Brandy and the redneck woman Hambone.  To gain milk and other dairy products, the Barefoot family maintains two cows, whose names I've prominently placed in the montage below.  What I did was download an online picture of a dairy farmer who lives in Minnesota, then used an expanded canvas, duplication, and a horizontal flip to make a mirror image.  The faces of Brandy and Hambone then replaced the original ones.  Of course, the line at the top paraphrases the nursery rhyme "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary."

Up next, the pretty childhood face of Hambone's dad Popeye shows up again, this time in a promotional announcement for an event that would take place this coming Saturday on the pond named after the clan engineer, Oliver.  There are literally hundreds of father-son combinations in the extended family, and all are invited to a contest to determine the best pair of fishermen.  (Popeye and Ralph are annual contenders, of course.)  This project was created by combining Photoshop and a preview feature at the online store Shindigz.com.  The store sells fishing-themed invitations for birthday parties.  I used the available text layers and a picture upload to create the preview; however, when I tried to add another graphic I was not allowed to do so.  As a result, the preview had to be saved to my hard drive, then taken to Photoshop for the addition of the footprints I found on the Barefoot Chiropractic & Wellness page.  Those prints were isolated from the frame, colored black, and scaled to fit the circle.

Finally, 'Bone's brother Ralph is the featured character in my second movie poster.  Or more accurately, a "nested character" I created by the name of Buck Hunter.  He's a "superhero" for the outdoors community as big game doesn't stand a chance.  I was inspired by the "Duckmen of Louisiana" videos which are referenced in Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson's book The Duck Commander Family, in which the hunters have larger-than-life portrayals.  I also wanted to create an old-time feel, and that explains "the star is the character" phrasing.  The bow and arrow set came from a sporting-goods store website.  To the rasterized text, I added two simulated sets of deer tracks.

Taking it to the hoop

With less than a week before the start of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, I decided to do a project I have had in my mind for a few months but never thought to execute until now.

In March, I took a photograph of one of the basketball scoreboards at Cerritos High School, in the same gym that Mississippi State head basketball coach Ben Howland played in when he went to school.  It has an "old-school" look, not only with the graphics, but also with spaces for complete rosters of both teams.  That evolved into an idea to make up a game between teams representing the Meadow and Four Oaks communities at the Meadow gymnasium.  (The high schools in those areas, as well as Benson High, were consolidated to make South Johnston High in 1969.)  For the player names, I used street names found in each of those areas.  (The PDF files for the school attendance boundaries can be accessed from this page.)

Wearing number 23 for Four Oaks is a new character I'm introducing here, Harold "Bud" Strickland.  He is a local legendary athlete; he still holds the all-time county passing yardage record as a football player, was the starting small forward in basketball, made all-county also in baseball, threw the javelin in track, and even was an amateur boxer briefly.  Strickland is also the owner of the land that is the home of Camp Paradise; more on that later.

On the other side of the board is Meadow's number 22, none other than Buddy Wayne Barefoot!  B.W. was a point guard in high school at South Johnston (also Hambone's alma mater) and he would reprise his role here, as well as being an assistant coach.  The head coach would be Hubert Barefoot, an uncle of his; Hubert's father is Jesse Wiley Barefoot, older brother of Popeye's father John Noah.

Oh, and to make this matchup more interesting, one of B.W.'s aunts, Dina Barefoot, is married to one of Bud's sons, Kenneth Strickland!  And there are more connections than even that:
  • Buddy's first cousin Kim Strickland is one of Bud's granddaughters; she's a singer/songwriter and once was a roommate of B.W.'s wife Brittany Spears in Nashville.
  • Bud Strickland rented out 170 acres of his land to four brothers - Bear, Boo Boo, Cooter, and Little Jack - who are fourth cousins of B.W.  (Their two times great-grandfather John Vinson and B.W.'s, Noah Gideon, were brothers).  Bear began Camp Paradise on that land, but he has since turned over chief executive duties to Hambone.

Unfortunately, when I put the scoreboard picture in the file, some parts turned out to be blurry.  This is due to me not being completely steady when I took the photo.  Also, I had to transform and skew the original photograph to make it appear to have a flat perspective.  To replace the blurry parts, I used pieces of a scoreboard found on this page.  I reduced the opacity and erased "appendages" to make it blend in with what I already had.  The numerals are from a football scoreboard I found on the Web while in my class at ABC Adult School and then transferred to my hard drive.

Cue up "Sirius" (the Chicago Bulls' theme music and the best of its kind ever!) and have a look...

Holiday bonus: B.W. and Brittany's "wedding announcement"

This weekend, I stayed up all night on Friday/Saturday as I always do.  I was looking to overhaul some of my personal files when I came across one in which I referenced an announcement of a wedding that took place in Mississippi on Dec. 21, 2002.  Memorie McCreary and William Finney got married that day; as I noted, the maid of honor for that event was a real-life namesake, Caroline Barefoot, who is McCreary's cousin.  I then concocted a scenario in which he married a cousin of the groom's, Alden Belk, and had a Rev. Bobby Baker (also referenced on the page as he wed Shannon Henderson and Daryl Morgan in a ceremony six months later) officiate.

Of course, I don't know whether any of this occurred, but I was surprised to find out that the announcement is still available to view on the website of a local newspaper.  With that, an idea came to me to use that as the template for the renewal of wedding vows of my Buddy Wayne Barefoot and Brittany (Raylene) Spears characters.

Before I post the "happy news," I have to explain why it's a renewal.

As I wrote in The Buddy Wayne Chronicles, B.W. had already married a local (Meadow, NC) woman named Shayla McLamb.  However, as he was touring the country as a musician, he met Spears, a young singer in her family's bluegrass band who wanted both professional respect and personal companionship.  Buddy Wayne was so smitten by Brittany that he dumped Shayla right away and started dating Brittany.  Because the Barefoot family disapproved so much of his divorce - and because Brittany was just 18 years old at the time - it was decided that the new couple would elope in Las Vegas.  (This is the first picture you see here.)

But B.W. still wanted the wedding of his dreams, and wanted to bond more with Brittany.  (Remember that both live separately with their families in different states, North Carolina and Kentucky respectively.)  Besides, it would be quality time with their daughter, Blanton Elizabeth who everyone calls "Lizzie."  So in 2013, the marriage would be re-enacted publicly at the Barefoot Family Farm.  Here's the happy couple - again - and below it is the official announcement.

Brittany Raylene Spears of Beattyville, KY and Buddy Wayne Barefoot of Benson, NC, renewed their wedding vows at 2 o'clock in the afternoon on October 19, 2013, at the Barefoot Family Farm in Meadow, NC.  They were originally married in Las Vegas in 2010 and are parents of a daughter, Blanton Elizabeth Spears.

Ralph Barefoot, uncle of the groom and pastor of Long Branch Church in Meadow, performed the ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Blanton Spears and Rebecca Spears of Beattyville. She is the granddaughter of Mildred McGrubb and the late John Henry McGrubb of Lee County and Breckinridge Spears and the late Amelia Spears of Beattyville.

The groom is the son of Brenda Barefoot of Benson and the special friend of Alonzo Barefoot of Meadow. He is the grandson of Rozelle Barefoot and the late Alfred E. Barefoot of Benson and Laura Raynor and the late Tommy Raynor of Benson.

The Spears Family Band provided most of the music, consisting of Brittany Spears, Blanton Spears Jr. (brother of bride), Bunch Spears (brother of bride), Bradshaw Spears (uncle of bride), Brashears Spears (uncle of bride), and Breckinridge Spears (grandfather of bride), all of Beattyville.  The soloist was Bubba Brister (friend of groom) of Meadville, MS.  Dancing was Bethany Spears (sister of bride) of Beattyville.

The church was decorated with the windows adorned with fall harvest leaves accented with ribbon. The altar had fall harvest leaves accented with ribbon and candelabra with purple bell flowers, white gerberas and bridal roses. The bride was given in marriage by her father.

The bride's dress was a Lillian M design. It was white satin with organza overlay and a strapless neckline. Special details included re-embroidered lace with a floral motif. The bodice was pearl and sequined covered with self-covered buttons to waist. The waistline was natural and enhanced with seed pearls and iridescent beading. It had an A-line skirt with embroidered lace of floral. Special details included motif with pearls and sequins scattered over skirt with a satin edging around the hem. The train was chapel length. The bride's bouquet was hand tied of Charlotte roses accented with white minicalla lilies.

The maid of honor was the cousin of the bride, Rachel Mullins of Lexington, KY. Bridesmaids included Kellie Jo McPooh of Booneville, KY (friend of bride), Lindsay Ratterree of Booneville (friend of bride), Brandy Barefoot of Raleigh, NC (cousin of groom), and Kimberly Strickland of Four Oaks, NC (cousin of groom). The attendants wore satin claret red colored dresses with a chiffon overlay and a small flowing train.

The flower girl was Blanton Elizabeth Spears, daughter of the bride and groom. The ring bearer was Bryson Barefoot, half-brother of the groom.

The best man was Bobby Ray Barefoot (brother of groom) of Pineville, NC. Groomsmen were Britton Barefoot (cousin of groom) of Raleigh, Brandon McLamb (friend of groom) of Plain View, NC, and Blanton Spears Jr. and Bunch Spears (brothers of bride), both of Beattyville.

Ushers were Brett Breathitt (friend of bride) of Jackson, KY, Dave Raper (friend of bride) of Lexington, KY, John William Barefoot (cousin of groom) of Meadow, NC, and Mike Johnson (friend of groom) of Smithfield, NC.

The bride's mother's dress was a champagne tea-length two-piece suit. The top was adorned in pearls and iridescent beading. Her bouquet was hand-tied nose gay of white tineke roses.

The bridegroom's mother's dress was violet tea-length two-piece suit of crushed crepe adorned with iridescent buttons. Her bouquet was hand-tied nose gay of Charlotte roses with French ribbon.

The maid of honor had a hand stein bouquet of white calla lilies, bridal roses, white miniature gerberas accented with purple bell flowers and ivory sheer ribbon. The bridesmaids had hand stein bouquets of white miniature gerberas, bridal roses, gypsophlia accented with purple bell flowers.

The reception was in the common room of Long Branch Church. Presiding at the register table was Harvey Barefoot (uncle of the groom).

Serving at the reception were Candace Peele, Ruby Elizabeth Barefoot and Bailey Rebecca Barefoot (cousins of the groom), Joshua Mullins (cousin of bride), and David Ratterree, Brianna Breathitt, and Michaelle Breathitt (friends of bride).

The couple honeymooned on a Caribbean cruise before returning to Meadow.

Between the template and the above notice, I made two significant changes:
  • Because B.W. has cut ties to his biological father, his great-uncle and "father figure" Alonzo replaces him in that slot.
  • The Christmas garlands and greens in the real wedding were replaced by fall harvest leaves and other related accents.
Two different couples' pictures in The Daily Record (Dunn, NC) were used as the bodies on which I put B.W.'s and Brittany's faces.  For the first picture, the backdrop is the Las Vegas Strip as published by LasVegas.com and DiscoverAmerica.com.  The second backdrop is a combination of the bridge and land from Raven Rock State Park near Lillington, NC (as published in The Daily Record) and water from a picture of a lake supplied by my former Photoshop teacher, Brady Poirier.

Finally, the first syllable of Brianna's name is pronounced "dry" instead of the usual "free," and Michaelle's first name is pronounced as if were spelled "Mikayla" or "McKayla."

Buddy Wayne is money - literally

This is a personal project I have thought of for quite some time, and I finished it just moments ago.

In 1999, the United States Mint began to put out a series of commemorative coins celebrating all of the 50 states.  The idea was to select an iconic landmark, person, or event for each state and place it on each coin on the other side of a new profile picture of George Washington.  It was an immediate hit among collectors and in fact was later expanded to include Washington, D.C. and all of the territories.  (For more information on the program, visit statequarterguide.com.)

I then had the idea of replacing Washington's face on the North Carolina coin with that of Buddy Wayne Barefoot.  This coin would be for collection only and would not be accepted as legal tender at any retail store or other location.  It turned out to be a harder task than I thought, and even now I don't know if the result is acceptable.  However, given what I had to work with as it relates to Photoshop, this is as good as it got.

I began by taking B.W.'s face and resizing it to fit approximately the size of the profile of Washington.  I also had to position it so as not to cover up two very important elements: the word "LIBERTY" on one side and the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the other.  After that, I tried to "stamp" the face to match how "the father of our country" is depicted on the real coin.  Just to get close to that, I needed six different effects layers within "buddyface": Bevel & Emboss, Inner Shadow, Inner Glow, Satin, Gradient Overlay, and Pattern Overlay.

You can judge how I did by looking at before and after.

Meet Hambone and her friends

I was inspired to create this by a quote in a book by reality television star and celebrity dancer Sadie Robertson called Live Original: "No one can choose their family, but all of us can choose our friends.  Whether or not you have a great family or a family you think is not so great, you can still choose awesome friends."

That leads to Hambone, who has butted heads with the rest of the house because of her laidback attitude toward life.  Buddy Wayne belittled her by not allowing to go around New Jerusalem before the big show without a chaperone, Brenda hates it that she enjoys the occasional beer, and she has battled Brandy for quality time with Annie (and resents it because Annie is Hambone's mother).  So what to do?  Make some good friends and make sure to have their back.

I based the frame of the photo on one I found in (the real) Brittany Barefoot's photo gallery on Facebook; this was from a party for the Greenwood High School senior class of 2008.  Part of the picture was washed out and dim so some adjustments were needed to make it more presentable.  Then I substituted the original faces with these six:
  • Sammy Bizzell: Nancy Bowling, junior softball pitcher, University of Arizona
  • Carlie McLamb: Kelsey (don't know her last name), student at Union University in Tennessee
  • Elizabeth "Beth" Barefoot: Her late namesake who lived in Clinton, NC
  • Reba Pearl "Hambone" Barefoot: Alyssa Barefoot, Meadow, NC
  • Laura Jean Johnson: Brandy Rapp
  • Bellamy Wood: Bethany Bowling, teacher at Northern Kentucky University
And of course I had to replace Beth and Hambone's "shoes" with bare feet.:)

The backdrop photo was taken at the Hacker Martin Gristmill and Cantilever Barn at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN.  John Rice Irwin established the replica 1850s homestead and it is now a tourist attraction and an affiliate of the Smithsonian.

Another reality show for Ralph

It's time for another mythical crossover episode in which one of my characters appears on an actual nonfiction TV show.  This time, the show is 90 Day Fiance, which airs on TLC.

The idea of this program, which debuted in 2013, is to pair an American citizen with an immigrant from another country.   The immigrant is in the U.S. on a K-1 visa, which shows the intent of that person to marry the citizen and stay in the country permanently.  But here's the deal (as Hambone would drawl): If the wedding doesn't take place in 90 days, the immigrant is effectively deported back to his or her country of origin!  Obviously, the rush for the couple to know each other, plan the marriage, and get the support of loved ones on both sides was too much for TLC to resist making into a TV show.

In this case, Ralph, our 26-year-old preacher/outdoorsman from North Carolina, has fallen in love with Beatha, a 23-year-old Irish folk dancer.  They meet at the New Jerusalem talent-show festival (more on the Barefoot family show here), and both show mutual love for each other.  Once Ralph returns home, he arranges for Beatha to join him in the U.S., he helps her sign the visa papers, and the rush is on.

There is huge drama on several fronts:
  • Is all of this happening for the right reasons of true love?  Or is it just so to fulfill Popeye's longtime desire to become a grandfather?
  • How much can Beatha get used to the quirky lifestyle of rural people in the South?
  • Finally, will the ceremony even be allowed to take place, given that Jesus Christ is symbolically the "bride" in a "marriage" to his church (Ephesians 5:31-32)?

While we ponder these questions, here's the publicity photo the network would create.  As always, Ralph is University of Mississippi employee Brett Barefoot.  As for Beatha, she's portrayed by Katie Yeakle, a trainee with American Writers and Artists, Inc.  AWAI, based in Florida, provides training and support for advertising copywriters.  (That's something I would like to do someday from my home for much-needed income, but so far all the training has been expensive and frankly I haven't been able to squeeze in the time I would need to devote, either.)  The TLC logo comes from Wikipedia, while the 90 Day Fiance graphic is a screenshot I took from the show's webpage.

As for the background shot, it comes from a picture originally with folk-music artists Brian and Lynn Hefferan, also known as the Fabulous Heftones.  One of their songs, "Bye Bye Blues," has become a favorite of mine since I first saw it on YouTube.  I had to make sure that Ralph's and Beatha's profiles were big enough to cover the Hefferans' original images; I also used the clone stamp to account for significant differences that arose.
